Please drain the swamp!

The great and glorious reality TV-star, serial con-artist, business failure, and bully President Donald J Trump ran a campaign promising a new way of government, bring in the best and brightest, drain the swamp…

Hold on, I know you’ll be shocked, he lied. He’s not draining. He’s not got sufficient insight to know that he’s just changing nasty swamp water for different nasty swamp water. Let’s take a look at the most recent public display of governmental hubris.

Tom Price. This millionaire, doctor-turned-politician, is a poster-child for all of the critters in the swamp that need to be removed. Simultaneously, he’s a poster child for much of what’s wrong with modern medicine (but that a different column). Price began treating the military as his personal charter fleet and also began using private charter aircraft to get himself and his wife around. Fortunately he resigned before he heard POTUS say “you’re fired.” Trump seemed less concerned over the actual abuses (and ongoing swamp-like behavior) than the appearance.

See here, here, here, here, and here.

Sean Aranas

Continuing in the series of cops who should be arrested let’s look at Sean Aranas. Or maybe he should be Sean “Are-an-anus.”

So what did “Officer Anus” do. It seems, from the endless viral videos, that he “robbed” local food vendor Beto Matias. You can see it here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. But wait, it’ll be OK because campus police are “looking into it.” Most folks
“get it” that you give a guy a citation and run him off if he doesn’t have the required permit. If he doesn’t move along you run him in (although arresting someone for this seems a bit counterproductive). But snatching the guy’s wallet out of his hands and taking out the cash, that was just dumb- even if it was legal.

Everyone on the planet has at least one cell phone capable of uploading real-time video. “Officer Are-an-anus” should be fired not for what he did- it was probably legal, but for being so stupid as to not realize the way it looks while he’s being a first rate dick.

Jeff Payne

If that name sounds familiar, it should. He’s an arrogant prick who’s the reason why everyone should be very afraid of the police. But he’s not just arrogant, he’s stupid. He threatened and then arrested a nurse, Alex Wubbels (nee Shaffer), at a a Salt Lake City, UT hospital.

The essence of the incident is that PAYNE wanted blood from a patient for an alcohol level. Wubbels told him no (see also here). Wubbels was right. Taking the blood without a warrant is illegal.

PAYNE is apparently too stupid to know that the warrantless procurement of the blood would be inadmissible in any legal proceeding. Or, worse, maybe he’s not stupid he’s just a fascist who thinks the rules don’t apply to him. PAYNE insisted and threatened Wubbels despite being informed by a hospital attorney that he was making an unlawful demand.

Wubbels was arrested and promptly released. We should all be afraid of “police” like PAYNE. Everyone in Salt Lake City should be pressing for his prosecution.

Get Out!

The Negro Motorist Green-Book was, according to wikipedia, published from 1936-66. Its goal was to help black travelers safely navigate the roads of America. Particularly in the south (the same areas Trump carried handily) travel in the first half of the 20th century was extraordinarily difficult for anyone driving while black (“DWB”). In some instances DWB could get you killed. It was hard to get gas, food, and lodging- the basics of travel taken for granted by literally everyone else in America. The Green-Book is available digitally from the New York Public Library and PDF can be found here. Hard copies of the actual book can be found used online fairly readily.

It seems that the book may find a resurgence in popularity. Missouri, best know recently for Ferguson and the shooting of Michael Brown, has the distinction of have a formal warning to black people from the NAACP.

each individual should pay special attention while in the state of Missouri and certainly if contemplating spending time in Missouri.

The warning specifically cites such high profile Missouri intellectuals as Republican Sen. Gary Romine– who sponsored a bill that makes it harder for folks to file discrimination suits.

The warning also cites Representative Richard Ray “Rick” Brattin Jr., who drew a distinction between homosexuals and human beings- but at least he invoke religion.

When you look at the tenets of religion, of the Bible, of the Qur’an, of other religions, there is a distinction between homosexuality and just being a human being.

Thanks Ricky, for that bit of enlightenment.

Missouri has again made history. And it might be the cause for the return of the “Green Book.” All I can say is WTF Missouri?
